This month, I spoke with Wael Shawky, Art Director of the inaugural edition of Art Basel Qatar for Canvas Magazine. He told me about his radical vision for the fair and about his plans to reimagine it as a place of research and depth. For him, the traditional “booth” model is outdated and his curation of the fair will try to move away from the commercial pressure that often keeps artists at a distance. He is also seeking to reach people through the fair and particularly artists and galleries from the Arab region. “We have invited many international emerging artists and so are supporting collaboration and cultural cooperation. … this sort of connection between the art fair and the market is really needed. That is how we can convince a young person to make art his or her career, because many of them do not yet see it as a viable career path. “
